I am Joel Ryan, an electrical engineer with a minor in robotics and automation from the university of Cincinnati. I have 5 semesters of coop experience in controls. I spent 3 semesters working as a plant engineer for a truck manufacturer. Most of my time was spent on designing touch screen human machine interfaces to improve existing processes, and developing an ANDON system for a large portion of the plant. In my final 2 semesters I worked for a system integrator where I was part of 2 large projects in the bourbon industry from start to finish. These projects included control panel design, HMI development, and PLC development. These projects also included device checkout and startup support.

I currently work for an MEP and Controls company based in Cincinnati, OH as part of their controls engineering team.

Experience

Spring 2017

Navistar

Controls Engineering Coop

In my first Coop rotation at navistar I got exposed to project managements and AutoCAD. I played a big role in an international relocation which helped me learn to work in a team.

Fall 2017

Navistar

Controls Engineering Coop

In my second Coop rotation at Navistar I was exposed greatly to PLC hardware. I started getting trained in ladder logic by the controls engineer on staff. I was put in charge of presenting the status of multiple controls related projects each week during meetings.

Summer 2018

Navistar

Controls Engineering Coop
In my most recent Coop at Navistar I focused on using devices in conjunction with PLC controllers such as RFID scanners, safety scanners, and barcode readers. In addition to this I lead a project for a maintenance system and was in charge of organizing meetings.

Spring and Summer 2019

Premier System Integrators

Controls Engineering Coop

During my final 2 coops i worked for 8 months for a system integrator. During this time I worked on 2 projects at a bourbon distillery. One was to build onto an existing system buy adding a remote IO panel to distribute bourbon to tanker trucks for transport. The second project was to upgrade the existing still from PLC5 control to ControlLogix. Both projects included HMI design, panel desing, PLC development, and checkout/startup suppor.

Work Projects

HMI Design

-Designed a human machine interface to show that the truck cab         placed on a fixture matched the expected model based on sensors and PLC controlers. This included a screen with a simple layout just showing if each part matched, and another screen that had more detailed information such as part numbers and the capabilities to switch between a manual barcode reader and an automatic reader.

Operator Call Buttons

-Modified already existing HMIs to include call buttons for maintenance, supervisor, and forklift operators for more material. I also added logic to the PLCs connected to the panel views to create alerts when a button was pressed. This involved text notifications, blinking lights at the operators station, and a notification on a shop wide system monitor.

RFID Badge Scanner

-Created PLC program to read a RFID badge scanner and interface with a HMI to build a database of workers. This database was used to create accountability for workers. When a part needed to be released a badge needed to be scanned so that product wasn't sent without being checked.
